The Pink Book Club

The PBC is an initiative of Dot Consulting. Which provides ‘you’ time opportunities for women.

We are built up of a growing number of everyday women who share experiences, knowledge, skills support and lots of fun and laughter.

The Pink Book Club began in 2002 when Nicola Weaver (founder), was going through a difficult time in her life.

Following the death of her mother in June 2002, Nicola returned to Australia in November 2002 leaving her fiancé in the UK.

Living in a hotel room, her belongings in storage, coping with the loss of her mother and separation from her family and her future husband being on the other side of the world, life was pretty difficult.

While standing in an Australia Post office queue, Nicola spotted a pink spiral bound book and bought it. In this book, she wrote her thoughts, feelings, plans and often lists (including shopping), and used the book for reflection to help put things into perspective. This provided her with support of a kind, where she did not need to explain why she felt certain thoughts, and found safety in not sharing with others, things that may have come out ‘wrong’ if verbalised. Looking back over entries in the book in days/weeks after, she often reflected on how she coped with past events. It was not a journal of sorts; it was purely there for occasions when she needed to make sense of what was what.

Some 12 months later, a friend of Nicola’s, Claire was also at a crossroads with some employment decisions and other events happening in her life, so Nicola issued her with a Pink Book to again put things into perspective. Claire found the Pink Book so useful she asked Nicola if she could initiate her sister and provide her with a Pink Book and so the seed was planted and numerous Pink Books have been issued thereafter.

In 2007 Nicola was a participant of the Catherine McAuley award. This experience provided her with a unique personal growth opportunity which amongst other things provided her with the network and confidence to start her own business in people development and realise the opportunity for a women’s only development forum. Quote ‘We often have development opportunities within our own industries, networks, and sporting clubs but rarely do we have the opportunity to ‘connect’ with women from a cross section of our communities.’

The Pink Book Club is keen to provide these connections that are both corporate and non corporate in order to maximise our exposure to different people, with different skills, backgrounds and cultures.

Nicola has learnt so much from other people and her own experiences and wants to provide these opportunities for others.

The Pink Book Club will offer various fun, development and connecting workshops and other activities for women to have a bit of ‘me’ time.

Going forward The Pink Book Club will be involved with women’s charities and community projects to utilise the skills, experience and connections formed.
